Summary/Abstract: Analysis of the results of research carried out as part of the monitoring program of young people leaving care and educational institutions and foster families in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The Robinson Crusoe Foundation and the Municipal Family Assistance Center in Szczecin, while conducting the "Machines for Independence" workshops, created the Independence Index, which allowed to identify problems in independence programs and to identify people with special support needs. Contemporary legal provisions concerning independence as one of the elements of the foster care system are discussed against the background of the characteristics of early adulthood and the history of care institutions.
