We live in a time when society, culture and science have become increasingly aware of the great importance of sport not only as a part of mass culture, but broadly understood, for individual and social health and well-being.The indispensable role of physical activity in the course of human life has been permanently scientifically confirmed also in the context of obesity prevention. The development of a sedentary lifestyle is the result of a socialization process leading to lack of physical activity developed in youth and continued into adulthood. At present we face the following apparent tendency in our cultural setting: People are more and more individualized, loosing beneficial impacts of community activities, involved in passive way of life lacking proper level of physical activities and active sports. Some preliminary data of the hit her to progress research of physical activity in the Czech population are presented to describe the specific relation of sport and sedentary society. As to mass sports, the Czech Republic is strongly influenced by the existence of new development of urban structures, including fitness centres, cycle paths, roller skates stadiums, beach volleyball playing fields, golf courses. The interpretation of relevant results regarding the situation of sports and physical activities in the Czech population has been considered in this context.
