Summary/Abstract: Family is considered to be a fundamental and original social group prior to human society. It is a basic element of society structure which makes it a universal value in the whole world of people’s society irrespective of socioeconomic or political systems of any country. Its significant role in the shaping of human society is reflected in provisions of many legal acts granting the protection of family in every sphere of activity. Nowadays protection of family is widely discussed in the context of so called work-life balance idea, which concentrates on the problem of reconciliation of professional duties and family life. However the analysis of labour law regulations presented in this monograph shows that the idea mentioned above is not only one aspect of family protection in labour law. In fact, there are three spheres of family functioning – biological, social and economical ones which are protected by labour law. The protection of biological sphere implicates legal instruments aimed at health protection of women employees related to maternity (pregnancy and breast-feeding). Protection of social sphere of functioning of the family is mainly related to reconciliation of occupational duties and family life. The third sphere of protection affects economical aspects of family functioning and it consists of two types of legal guarantees – institutional and financial ones, aimed at ensuring financial and social stability for the employees and their families.
