Summary/Abstract: In 1882, the Russian-Jewish journal *Voskhod*, published in St. Petersburg, released an extensive series of detailed reports drawn from official documents; these offer insights—at once truthful and fascinating—into the origins and development of the Russian-Jewish colonization project. These reports, beside firsthand-made observations in the Russian-Jewish colonies by the editor, provided the primary material for the history of the Russian-Jewish colonies presented here.
