Summary/Abstract: This first part of my memoirs had just been typeset—down to the final signature—at the printing house when the World War broke out. At my request, the book was not published; death had descended upon humanity, and the life of a solitary old recluse—let alone the story of such a life—mattered little. Contractual obligations now compel me to consent to the publication of these pages. They are out of step with the times—in every sense. Even amidst the struggles of Austria’s political factions, I belong to none of the camps; I am a man without a uniform. At most, my advocacy for revolutionizing the school system—and for the fair selection of the most capable students—might merit some attention.
