Summary/Abstract: Drawing upon the Serbian case study, this monograph demonstrates the constituent elements of national ideology and illustrates how it "functions." It examines how the mechanisms of this ideology took shape within the context of "insurgent-style" national movements; identifies the factors that influenced the refinement of these mechanisms—particularly in light of the divergent developmental paths of the Serbs living under Austrian and Ottoman rule; and assesses the respective contributions made to the construction of the foundational national "worldview" by the intellectual and politico-military elites, as well as by a much broader, non-literate, folklore-oriented audience. The author endeavors to bridge the divide between political and cultural history by pursuing a path of multidisciplinary synthesis. He conceptualizes national ideology as a system of imagery. While rejecting the extremes of other theoretical schools regarding the nature of nations and nationalism, the author adopts an ethno-symbolic approach—one he views as particularly productive within the realm of ideology. Intended for historians, humanities scholars, and the general reading public.
