Summary/Abstract: "The collective monograph Blind Spots in Literary Translations from/into Czech is devoted to the issue of ""untranslatable places."" The team of authors consists of literary historians, theorists and critics, aestheticians and linguists who also have direct experience with translating both fiction and non-fiction texts from/into Czech and dozens of other languages. The authors reflect on why, despite the best knowledge of both languages, we are still faced with very specific questions when translating and the need to find solutions to them, such as: How to distinguish in the target language differences in the source language that the target language ""does not know""? What to do with established phrases or allusions taken from long-forgotten films, statements by politicians, or various curious historical events that have been preserved in the source language? How to convey historical experience reflected in linguistic expression if it is completely different from the experience of users of the target language? How can we ""make visible"" in the target language places that this language cannot ""see""?Language is inextricably linked to the culture, history, and way of thinking of the people who used and use it, and the degree of knowledge of a language depends on the degree of knowledge of the history and thinking of the users of that language. No dictionary, however comprehensive, can eliminate these ""blind spots,"" as no dictionary capable of condensing the entire human experience is feasible.The book is dedicated to the memory of Josef Jařab (1937–2023), literary historian, theorist, translator, and the first rector of Palacký University in Olomouc after 1989."
