Summary/Abstract: This volume, Medieval Fortifications in Banat, forms part of a broader series of archaeological and ethnological repertories dedicated to the historical geography and material heritage of Banat. The work emerges from long‑term scholarly collaboration among museums in Timișoara, Arad, and Reșița, and reflects an effort to consolidate dispersed research on medieval fortifications into a coherent scientific framework. The project was developed within the cross‑border initiative “The Fortresses of Banat – a European Cultural Heritage”, financed through the Romania–Serbia Phare CBC Program, and carried out in partnership with the Regional Museum of Zrenjanin. The study situates medieval fortresses, key symbols of power in the 11th–16th centuries, within the broader context of Banat’s frontier history, emphasizing their dual role alongside ecclesiastical institutions as centers of authority in medieval society. The work also addresses historiographical challenges, including the long‑standing marginalization of Banat in Romanian historical writing, the absence of strong academic institutions in the region, and the fragmented nature of previous research. Beyond its analytical contribution, the project involved practical heritage activities: creating an exhibition, documenting fortresses through graphic and photographic materials, clearing vegetation at key sites, and installing standardized informational panels. The volume stands as the culmination of a complex scientific and logistical endeavor, made possible through extensive institutional cooperation and the support of numerous colleagues. It contributes significantly to the study of medieval Banat and to the preservation of its cultural heritage.
