Summary/Abstract: This study offers an overview of the Serbian nobility of medieval Banat, a multi‑confessional and multi‑ethnic region whose history and political actors have long attracted scholarly interest. The work seeks to fill a significant gap in the understanding of Banat’s social history by examining the emergence, activity, and eventual disappearance of Serbian noble families between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Given the vastness of the topic, the analysis focuses on the political, social, and historical conditions that shaped the development and assimilation of the Serbian nobility within the Kingdom of Hungary, rather than providing exhaustive monographic studies of each family. Drawing on a rich but underused body of bibliographic and documentary sources, the study reconstructs the trajectories of major noble families—including the Lazarević, Branković, Jakšić, Petrović, Țrepović, and Belmužević lineages—while situating them within the broader context of regional power structures and social dynamics. The work highlights the need for a synthetic approach to this topic, given the fragmentary nature of previous research and the abundance of unexplored archival material. Without claiming exhaustiveness, the study aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the social role of the Serbian nobility in Banat and to serve as a foundation for future, more detailed investigations into individual families.
