Summary/Abstract: Modern society is taking shape in a time when rationality and humanity are increasingly distant from each other. At the heart of this process is a paradox: the more society is able to measure phenomena and processes, the less it is able to understand them. Science, technology and politics have developed sophisticated mechanisms of quantification and prediction, but have lost the moral and communicative ability to interpret the meaning of what they measure. In that paradox is born the need for the renewal of social thought - for a new theoretical synthesis that would combine knowledge and justice, rationality and empathy, equality and freedom. The concept of social inclusion becomes a key expression of that need. It does not mean only the integration of the marginalized into existing institutions, but a profound transformation of the very meaning of the social community. Inclusion is a normative and ontological category: it concerns not only economic relations and social policies, but the fundamental way in which society understands man, dignity and belonging.
