Summary/Abstract: The life’s work of Károly Tóth constitutes a remarkable chapter in the self-reflection of the Hungarian minority over the past century and, at the same time, in the history of Hungarian intellectual thought, particularly modern national liberalism. The complete picture of his intellectual legacy, principles, and ideas—previously known only in fragments—unfolds through the writings collected in this volume. Károly Tóth’s activity and oeuvre were decisive in both intellectual and practical terms in the fields of Hungarian political life in Czechoslovakia and later in Slovakia, social self-organization and self-governance, as well as minority studies scholarship. The beginnings of these processes before the political transition and their subsequent development can be traced firsthand in this posthumous volume through the writings of one of their key shapers, which bear the authenticity of an engaged eyewitness spanning three decades. The book may also be regarded as the intellectual testament of Károly Tóth, offering a comprehensive summary of his life, career, and world of ideas.
