Summary/Abstract: Here, for the first time, the peoples of Europe are included as equal subjects within the field of ethnology, and here, in the second main section, which describes "the folk culture of Europe in its historical development," the increasingly widespread demand for extending the scope of folkloric study to greater historical depth is addressed. For the first time, the focus shifted to pan-European and Old Europe. Now, these two thematically related and complementary presentations emerge from the broader scope of the third volume of "Illustrated Ethnology" and combine to form the "Folklore of Europe" that many within the field of academic ethnology have recognized as essential. (from Introduction). // BOTH AUTHORS (FATHER AND SON) WERE AT LEAST CLOSE TO RACIST IDEOLOGY DURING THE NAZI ERA. THEIR WORK IN THE MANAGEMENT OF THE ETHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM IN VIENNA WAS ALSO LINKED TO ANTISEMITIC ACTIVITIES AGAINST JEWISH EMPLOYEES. NEVERTHELESS, BOTH WERE HONORED AND AWARDED IN POSTWAR AUSTRIA.
