Summary/Abstract: The monograph presents the findings of research on the everyday reality of work in Polish Social Services Centres. The author discusses the practical side of social benefits policy, which emerges at the intersection of the law, social workers’ attitudes to rules and regulations, the societal and institutional entanglements of their work, and the decision-making process in the local institutions responsible for distributing benefits. The gap between the tenets of social welfare policy and everyday practice constitutes a hidden dimension of local social policy that is impossible to grasp using official statistics.
