Summary/Abstract: Combining rigorous theoretical reflection with in-depth empirical inquiry, this book investigates expressive individualism as a vital source of resilience against the growing tide of unreflective behaviour and the crisis of critical thinking. Introducing two novel analytical categories—""navel-gazing"" (or ""Ego culture"") and ""Ego stimulants""—the author unveils how an egocentric ethos of superficiality, the cult of self-optimization and technologized objectification narratives displaces empathy and communal solidarity.Drawing on both extended qualitative interviews with artists and an arts-based research approach that makes creative use of respondents' own texts, the study opens up fresh avenues for critical pedagogy, cultural sociology and social psychology. An essential voice in today's discourse on the human condition, this volume charts the educational competencies we must cultivate to safeguard individual agency and communal bonds in an increasingly technologized world."
