Summary/Abstract: This research monograph traces the journey of young adults from children's homes towards independence and focuses on the psychological aspects and needs of young adults in the process of becoming independent. At the theoretical level, we try to define the forms of institutional care for children in our country and abroad, we look at individuals who grow up in children's homes, and we present psychological phenomena related to leaving the institution. The research part was conducted qualitatively through interviews with eight young adult participants from children's homes and seven staff members who work with them. The results showed that leaving a children's home is a key life moment for young adults. It is often experienced ambivalently. Young people are trying to gain independence, but are often caught off guard by the many obstacles in their adult lives, often rejecting the help of others in the process. The complex search for their own identity stands out in the background. Achieving a sense of independence in adult life depends on the quality of preparation for independence in the institution, but also, for example, on the influence of their biological family. The book contains practical recommendations based on research findings. It is addressed to young people leaving children's homes, but also to those who accompany them on this journey.
