Summary/Abstract: Throughout history, certain forms of ethnically based non-territorial self-government have also existed in the territory of the present-day Republic of Serbia. These primarily include institutions that spontaneously emerged over time within the Ottoman Empire, such as certain elements of the millet organization and church (religious)-school municipalities of different faiths, as well as certain legal solutions that were envisaged in various legal acts during the development of the state legal order of the Habsburg Monarchy.
