Summary/Abstract: This book talks about how significant statements in the 20th and early 21st centuries on the topic of "self-determination" reflected the struggle that took place over the international meaning of freedom and were part of it. She does this by investigating how the conflict between two ideas of freedom appeared in the international discourse of "self-determination" at key historical moments. I call these two ideas the "radical" idea of freedom and the "liberal-conservative" idea of freedom. Although the struggle over the international meaning of freedom has appeared in many other areas and modes of discourse, this book concentrates on the ways in which the conflict between these two ideas of freedom has played out through key international debates on "self-determination" over the past hundred years.
