Summary/Abstract: The coursebook entitled A fordításelmélet alapjai. Egyetemi jegyzet és feladatagyűjtemény (The Basics of Translation Theory. A Coursebook and a Set of Exercises for Translation and Interpreter Students) is a comprehensive textbook designed for undergraduate (BA) students studying translation and interpreting. The book offers a balanced integration of foundational translation theories with practical application, making it suitable for both classroom instruction and independent study. It begins with an exploration of key concepts and major theoretical approaches in translation studies – including equivalence, functionalism, and cultural translation –, providing students with a solid theoretical grounding. The theoretical chapters offer a short overview of major translation theories and models structured in seven lessons, including Eugene Nida’s theory of formal and dynamic equivalence, Peter Newmark’s communicative and semantic translation approaches, and various other approaches such as Reiss and Vermeer’s theories. These topics are discussed alongside cultural perspectives and problems related to culturally bound concepts (culture-specific words, realia). Special attention is also given to Kinga Klaudy’s system of lexical and grammatical transfer operations.
