Summary/Abstract: The Republic of Serbia applied for membership of the European Union in December 2009. The European Commission concluded in its opinion on Serbia's application for membership in 2011: "If the process of harmonization of regulations continues and further steps are taken to ensure the implementation of regulations, Serbia would be in a position to assume the obligations of EU membership in almost all areas of the acquis communautaire in the medium term (5 years)." The Republic of Serbia began negotiations on accession to the European Union on 21 January 2014.
