Summary/Abstract: The narrative of a Czech, mobilized at the beginning of WW I to the Habsburg Army, sent to Serbia, spent much time in Serbian captivity, escaped to Albania... IN THE INTRODUCTION: If I am publishing these memoirs only now, it is only in agreement with what Professor Dr. Jiří Guth once told us as students: "When you have written a book, lock it in a desk and let it lie for ten years. Then read it, and if you find it worth, publish it. You will save yourself disappointment." I have had this book ready for twelve years. From the day I left Benešov with the 3rd Marching Battalion of the 102nd Infantry Regiment, which was September 23, 1914, I wrote down everything I considered important every day. I wrote everything in shorthand. On November 19 of that year I went over to the Serbs and at the end of that month I was in a prisoner-of-war-camp in Niš, where I rewrote and edited everything. After eleven months we left Niš and marched, not knowing where, for two months. We crossed Kosovo Polje and ended up in Vlora, Albania. Even then I was still writing down, and if hunger allowed, I also drew. Then in Italy, in the silence of the monastery, I copied everything once more with a pen and supplemented it with the latest notes from that bad journey while my memory was fresh.
