Summary/Abstract: The Czech national awakening or revival belongs among the most miraculous phenomena in the modern history of Europe in general. It happened with unprecedented speed and in such amazing contrast to the previous state of affairs that it is spoken of as a true miracle. Although general excitement was also evident elsewhere at that time, the so-called Slavic Renaissance did not manifest itself to the same extent anywhere, not even remotely. Fresh air blew into the Habsburg state during the time of Joseph II, a graduate of French Enlightenment philosophy, when in 1781 he issued a patent of tolerance and at the same time a patent on the abolition of hereditary serfdom, with which he unknowingly overcame his "famous centralizing Germanization".
