Summary/Abstract: The book is a systematic study of rhythmic theory and the so-called "doctrine of ethos" in ancient Greek literature of the Classical period. The first study examines the etymology of the word "rhythm" together with the earliest occurrences of this word in the surviving corpus of ancient Greek literature. An attempt is made to trace the way in which "rhythm" became a technical term of musical theory. The second study proposes a definition of musical rhythm, which could be accepted as a common denominator of most ancient and modern definitions of the term. Similarities and differences between the ancient Aristoxenian (but not only) and some modern understandings of rhythm are outlined. The third study discusses the main sources (mostly from the Aristoxenian tradition) for the so-called "doctrine of ethos". The conclusion is that in the Classical era there was a full-fledged systematic theory of rhythm (Aristoxenian), while such a theory is not available in the case of the ethos of rhythms.
