Summary/Abstract: The publication presents to the contemporary Bulgarian reader the little-known Bulgarian Renaissance work “Tsvetana” by Nestor Debrenski. The preface, in turn, recognizes the work as a typical comedy of characters, emphasizing the unreasonable fascination with fashions, the internally tense relationship between one’s own and another’s, the violation of patriarchal security in the home as a result of external hostile encroachment. However, excessive subordination of the text to the Serbian prototype − “Pokondirena tikva” by Jovan St. Popović is also shown – a circumstance that does not allow it to take a completely independent place in the development of Renaissance comedy. The main heroine – Tsvetana – is seen as a special comic character because of her inherent “unconsciousness”, from which a number of speech and action discrepancies arise in relation to her real state and situation. The finale of the work is interpreted through the coup de théâtre technique, whose suggestions, if not too educational, are at least emphatically life-affirming. The appendices at the end of the book aim to contextualize the figure of Nestor Debrenski in view of the cultural dynamics of the time.
