Summary/Abstract: Parallel to the growth of collected data about each individual, the danger of misuse of this data, both by individuals and by companies and state institutions, has also increased drastically. The free flow of information is a necessity, but also a great danger for the privacy, independence and individuality of each individual. Putting data at the center of industry development and management of societies requires raising to a high level both the information security system and the system of protection of fundamental rights of citizens. In addition to the technical and IT aspects of the security of collected data, it is extremely important to create a complex and effective legal system for the protection of personal data. The book is a contribution to understanding the various aspects of that complex legal system of personal data protection. The book explains and defines data and its types, then explains the concept of legal data protection, its historical development, the principles it is based on, and the rights of citizens resulting from the development of the data protection system. A special part of the book is dedicated to the presentation and analysis of regulations that regulate the field of personal data protection on an international and national level. The last chapter of the book is devoted to the practice of protecting individuals from misuse of personal data by presenting and analyzing a number of cases that were processed before the European Court of Human Rights, the Court of Justice of the European Union and national independent bodies that have data protection under their jurisdiction.
