Summary/Abstract: This book deals with the adaptation of people to the new democratic system as a general theme and focuses on the citizens of post-communist Europe who have gone through enormous political and economic changes in the last two decades. It traces their life experiences and trajectories, from living in a communist political and economic system to adapting to the rapid and sweeping changes of post-communist democracy and market capitalism. In countries where the Communist Party dominated for decades with its pervasive ideology and mechanisms of social control, ordinary people built survival strategies in an economy of great scarcity and a political system in which laws and institutions rarely functioned as intended or expected. This book shows to what extent, and in what way, these adaptation strategies persisted in the new post-communist era.
