Summary/Abstract: The Central and Eastern European Working Group for Governance in the Non-Profit Sector, since its foundation in 2001, has been dealing with the challenges faced by the boards of directors of non-profit organizations. Bringing together experts and practitioners from nine countries, the working group studies the issue of governance from the unique perspective of non-profit and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Our study of the boards of directors of non-profit organizations in the United States showed that Western models of governance are often far from the reality of our countries. Non-governmental organizations in CEE operate in an unusual environment shaped by the communist past and the difficult political, social and economic transition of recent years. However, the needs and circumstances of individual organizations differ significantly, depending on local attitudes, experiences and goals. Although it is not always easy to find common ground, we believe it is important to strengthen the non-governmental sector in this part of the world by providing a consistent governance framework in the non-profit sector that responds to local needs. We consider such a framework both a practical need and a strategic necessity that helps our non-governmental organizations to act more efficiently, while contributing to the broader goal of greater transparency and accountability in the non-governmental sector as a whole.
