Summary/Abstract: The Republic of Serbia is a multiethnic and multicultural state in which a significant number of members of different nations and ethnic communities live. It is home to members of over forty minority communities, which, according to the results of the last census, make up 12.29% of the total population. Most of these communities use their own languages in everyday use. In some cases, minority languages are the exclusive medium of communication, but a significant number of members of national minorities also use the Serbian language in parallel, and in multiethnic environments sometimes some other dominant language in that local environment. Mutual knowledge of the languages of other communities is the basis for establishing intergroup contacts, connecting and integrating into the wider society. The question arises whether current educational policies in minority environments in Serbia encourage bilingualism through education or lead to segregation. The goal of this book is precisely to evaluate current educational policies based on empirical data and identify the challenges and potential obstacles that the education system and all actors participating in it face.
