Summary/Abstract: Still struggling with the consequences of the peak of the migrant crisis in 2015, the European Union experienced two more shocks in the following year, 2016. The first was Brexit, and the second was the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections in the United States of America. The great uncertainty in international affairs was additionally reinforced by fears regarding the future of the international order created in the decades after the Second World War and the Cold War... Equally, the fate of the European project is under the impact of a wave of emerging populism and the predominance of national interests over the general European interest. The Ukrainian crisis, which has acquired all the features of a frozen conflict, the re-emergence of the Russian Federation, the active action of the People's Republic of China and Turkey in the sphere of interest of the European Union, as well as America's reluctance to continue its foreign policy towards the European Union according to the "default" from the Cold War and post-Cold War period, pose to every observer of European affairs many more questions than it is possible to answer.
