Summary/Abstract: With the collapse of the SFR Yugoslavia and the bloody war that followed during the last decade of the 20th century, the Balkans found itself in a specific situation that has not been completely overcome until today. The main characteristic of this situation is reflected in the fact that in this geographically relatively small area of the former Yugoslavia, along with violent conflicts, there has been a new "Balkanization", that is, political fragmentation into more or less independent states and other entities (Kosovo, which is recognized as independent only by part of the international community, relatively politically autonomous entities such as Republika Srpska, etc.). Today's picture of the Balkans, where no less than 11 independent states can be counted, can be compared, for example, with that of a century ago, when there were only six independent states in the same area, while two centuries ago the Balkans were ruled by only two great empires. As Ilija Garašanin prophetically put it in his Načertani, writing about the future of the area where the South Slavs lived, "the failure of the alliance between Serbia and other neighbors" ... would lead "to the dismemberment of our people into small provincial principalities ... which would be inappropriately surrendered to other people's and foreign influence", as well as endless mutual arguments and disputes.
