- Summary/Abstract:As the editor and author of one of the more than thirty scholarly explorations regarding the influence of the Cold War on the Christian churches of Canada and the USA during the period from 1945 to 1990, as well as the role of these communities on the developments of the Cold War (a book which is now in the process of publishing19) collectively we came to very important insights that may serve churches in future religious or ideological conflicts. In addition to introductory chapters and conclusion the chapters are divided into five sections. The first section contains explorations of the Canadian situation. One of surprising insights was that the Canadian Protestant churches were often more concerned regarding the aggressive politics of the allied USA than to the threat from the East. Protestant church communities which make up the majority of the American population I divided into two sections because of the very different approach and reaction of Protestant believers. The first section deals with so called “Main Line Churches” which attempted to respond in moderation to the challenges of communism and to try, despite the awareness of the communist danger, to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict and nuclear disarmament. This ultimately resulted in serious losses of their influence upon the government and a weakening of the support of its membership. So called Evangelical Protestant churches, which are conservative, supported the escalation of the conflict between West and East, some of them expecting the end of the world. From the 1960s onward their influence grew and their political clout increased. The Catholic Church had fewer internal tensions but among Catholics major changes occured after the Second Vatican Council: from very pronounced anti-communism prior to the Council a much more subtle analysis took place and a more differentiated approach to the world situation became noticeable. Eastern Orthodox churches did not have a unified approach and reaction. Because their church headquarters were in countries under communist control, they experienced sharp conflicts leading to schisms because part of their membership was extremely anti-communist while some of their church leadership experienced communist pressure. In the current intensification of the relationships between Russia and America these studies are not merely of historical interest but are becoming relevant to our contemporary situation.

(Religion and politics at the same source; old-time archetypal statesmen and preachers as a combination of religion and (political) statesmanship)
- Author(s):Neven V. Cvetićanin
- Language:Serbian
- Subject(s):Christian Theology and Religion, Politics and religion
- Page Range:33-44
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:the religion; the politics; the habitat; archetypal statesmen; Moses; Muhammad; Aurelius Augustine
- Summary/Abstract:The paper puts forward the thesis that the first "habitat" of politics is actually religion, i.e. the thesis that religion and politics have the same source because they respond to similar issues of human existence. Politics will be "emancipated" from the religion later in the European Modern, while in the pre-modern times it had its first habitat in it. In order to prove previous thesis, the paper examines work of (archetypal) statesmen and oldtime preachers such as Moses, Muhammad and Aurelius Augustine, finding that their work does not belong only to the realm of religion, but also to the fields of politics, history and law. This relates especially to the work of Moses and Muhammad in which interweave religion, politics, positive law and other various fields of human activity. Therefore, the paper concludes that the work of archetypal statesmen such as Moses and Muhammad shows and proves the thesis that the first habitat of politics is actually religion.

- Page Range:45-66
- No. of Pages:22
- Keywords:religionization of politics; politicization of religion; survival drama; neoliberal capitalism; powerlessness of humanism
- Summary/Abstract:The modern era is approaching its existential twilight. One of the important features of the twilight is the increasing religionization of politics and politicization of religion. These phenomena are not new, nor they represent the general concept of politics and religion around the world, but they are serious indicators of regressive processes, and continuity of the historical impotence of humanism and democracy. Religionization of politics has its climax in transforming the leader-master into the earthly god. The prospects of a free and righteous world, as well as the rise of morality in interpersonal relations are deteriorating. The "wild" sacred and degenerate profane are on the rise. Religiousness, democracy and human rights are surrounded by violence, killing, torture and persecution of a multitude of people, and also by crime. We are entering one of the most critical epochs of the post-modern era. "Risk", "uncertainty", "non-transparency" and "opacity" are too mild, actually inappropriate terms, to describe the situation. The certainty of the situation far exceeding this crisis is emerging. Many countries are fighting for survival. Neither philosophy, nor science, nor religion, and especially nor politics, in their predominant currents, can match the drama that is constantly growing and taking on the traits of a potential tragedy. Counter-processes are too weak, far away from being hegemonic. The underlying source of such a state is in the "jaws of the system" of global neoliberal and increasingly murderous capitalism. That kind of capitalism and both religious and profane ethics are incompatible.

Finally, at the particular level of analysis, we point to the heteronomous and heterosexual character of the Serbian (geo)political elite.

- Keywords:peace; trouble; war; Balkans; Islam; minister; Jesus; Christianity; Muslim; church; Bible; Koran; Orthodoxy; Catholicism; justice; Benedict XV; John XXII; Anwar el-Sadat; theology
- Summary/Abstract:In his article the author speaks of peace and other directly or indirectly related issues. He considers the question not only important for the state, but also for the church as a human society. Since members of different religions and nations live in the Balkans today, peacekeeping has been increasingly important. Peace in the Balkans has often been violated either by our own doing or somebody else's, but since we have always lacked selfcriticism, we have always blamed someone else for our mistakes and irresponsibility. Before starting to rebuild peace, it is always necessary to answer the question: what are we to one another? If we are friends, let us start immediately with peacebuilding, if we are enemies, let us reconcile, forgive one another in order to begin peacebuilding as early as possible.

- Page Range:101-118
- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:patriotism; nationalism; Serbian Orthodox Church; nineties of the twentieth century; uprising patriotism; constitutional culture
- Summary/Abstract:In this report we were dealing with the question and definition of nationalism present in Serbian society. Nationalism is the consequence of sudden social and political changes in the territory of the former Yugoslavia without prior preparation of the public to new circumstances. We were dealing with the definition of patriotism that stood as an antipode to nationalism as well, even though a positive point of view can be noticed especially in Serbian society being torn in multilayered crisis. During the crucial nineties one of the most important, maybe even central-institutions in Serbia was the Orthodox church, which, applying the same model from the past, took over responsibility for defending of national identity of Serbian people distancing itself from the others. The last part of the essay is dedicated to the issue of constitutional patriotism, an idea significantly represented after WWII in West Germany. The consequences of the war initiated by Germany, among other things left the trace of collective guilt and a serious identity crisis after fascist and nazi actions against many nations in Europe.

- Summary/Abstract:John Milbank thinks that religion in today’s world should not be interpreted as a private sphere but as a ritual pattern or implicit shape of believing. Modern secularity represents reconstruction of the modern due to human existence has always been connected with the idea of Absolute. In that idea Christianity follows Greek philosophical thought that providence and presence of absolute being is connected with the idea of good and telos. Secular domain to suppose domain of human existence which dismiss divine intervention but command strictly human shape of engagement in that way that secular humanism bring to extreme and nihilism where human will receive absolute freedom in which moral values doesn’t exist. Furthermore Milbank accepts version of Christian socialism which is focused on common distribution of goods and distributism and advocates moral market which must have social purpose and business that includes association of owners, workers and consumers.

- No. of Pages:16
- Keywords:Frédéric Beigbeder; Contemporary French Literature
- Summary/Abstract:Novel "Help, I beg for forgiveness", written by Frédéric Beigbeder, one of the most important contemporary French authors, can be read as metaphor of our time, in which the spiritual values and the quest for freedom are replaced by consumerism, the entertainment industry and (craving for) material resources, in this piece embodied in the main character, Octave Parango. As a talent scout for a Paris fashion company, Octave comes to Moscow with the task of finding a girl to whom "three billion women would like to resemble". The dictatorship of youth and beauty are just the first step in unraveling the decadent world of fashion and marketing in a confession which, from the beginning to the end, forms the novel, told by the main character to the priest in the temple of Christ The Savior. The motive of this church has multiple symbolic links with the relations between France and Russia, while as a location of novel remains at the margin. Equally strikingly, the absence of the motives of religion and the priest who carefully listens to Octave’s sins will culminate, in the end, in one of the Beigbeder's satirical turnovers at the very end, when all hero’s thoughts of freedom and love will receive their tragic-comical ending in a recounted story of finding God, leaving the reader with a bitter question whether there is forgiveness and salvation in this, modern world.

- Summary/Abstract:What separates Poland from increasingly more globalist and atheist societies of the West is a specific role of religion and church in this Central European country’s political and public life. Аs a country of traditionally strong catholicism and political right, Poland, next to other Visegrad group countries, is becoming increasingly more irritant to the liberal Europe as an example that breaks the ideological uniformity of the EU. Influenced by modern global changes, migrations and wars fought in the EU’s peripheral space, the differences between EU’s proclaimed values and de facto values of polish society are also becoming more obvious, especially when it comes to sensitive issues such as abortion, family, legalization of drugs, gay marriage, attitude towards the political left, liberalism and recently, treatment of muslim refugees. An interesting question that deserves more attention is the extent to which the Catholic Church can influence public opinion on this matters, and will the new waves of migration in the near future along with the rising right in the EU and USA, make the Catholic Church in Poland, the ruling Law and Justice party and other right-wing movements so powerfull that they could trigger a domino effect among Europe’s conservatives?
