Summary/Abstract: Contrary to the impression that the public gets based on media reports, in Serbia, in terms of the absolute number of deaths, family violence takes precedence over criminal confrontations, and a large number of incidents occur between friends and blood relatives. Almost half of the victims, or targets in incidents involving firearms, are young people, who most often "pass" with injuries, while the fatal outcome is more common among older citizens. The perpetrators are clearly dominated by men, while the victims are women, and illegal weapons are very often used in incidents - among other things, pistols and hunting rifles for which there is a possibility of legalization. The majority of citizens believe that firearms are important to own for personal self-defense, but they are against carrying them.
