Summary/Abstract: The subject of negotiations on accession to the European Union are the conditions under which a candidate country becomes a member of this organization. The basis of the accession negotiations is the fulfillment of the criteria for membership established at the EU summit in Copenhagen in 1993. The acceding state is obliged to demonstrate to other member states that it is capable or will be capable by the time of accession to fully fulfill its obligations as a member state. The most demanding part is fulfilling the third criterion for membership, i.e. harmonization of domestic legislation with EU regulations. On the day of accession, the application of EU legal acquis is extended to the territory of the new state, which is obliged to apply them on its territory.
