Summary/Abstract: Over time, EU cohesion policy has contributed to increasing the standard of living and economic opportunities in the EU regions by improving skills and employment opportunities, increasing the accessibility of the region, supporting the building of administrative capacities, establishing links between research institutions, universities and the business community, as well as providing services to small and medium-sized enterprises. By supporting the key factors of economic growth, the Union policy enabled EU regions to grow faster. The evolution of cohesion policy was very progressive and through different program periods, goals, principles and operational rules underwent numerous changes. Understanding these changes and the impact of the socio-economic context of the EU on the development of cohesion policy is an important lesson for relevant actors in Serbia in the process of harmonizing its national systems during EU accession, that is, in the upcoming phase of opening the chapter of community assets.
