Summary/Abstract: Energy supply is essential for the sustainability of economic development in the Western Balkans, as the poorest region in Europe, with a large number of relatively small economies. During the conflicts that led to the disintegration of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during the 1990s, a significant part of the energy infrastructure was damaged or neglected. The process of its restoration was long and difficult, and the electrical systems of many of these countries still remained weak. The reports of the World Bank and the European Commission predict that, observed in the medium term, the energy shortage in the region will increase dramatically, which gives credibility to the demands to establish a single regional energy market, with a greater degree of cooperation. In order to achieve the macro-economic revival of the region and the improvement of economic growth through more efficient use of energy, less negative impact on the environment and reduction of energy poverty, appropriate national and regional energy strategies and policies are necessary.
