Summary/Abstract: This book presents a fascinating look at the history of collecting, one of the most interesting fields of art history, which offers opportunities for interdisciplinary research. It explores the origins and development of art collections, the ways in which works were acquired through agents and presented to the public, and, not least, the collectors themselves. In addition to art history, it also includes history, sociology, psychology, the history of the art market and diplomatic relations. The study of the provenance of works of art is now a highly valued discipline not only in academic research but also in the contemporary art market. This volume contains a variety of essays that explore these aspects of early modern collecting through selected examples. The book is divided into four sections for a better understanding: Reconstructing Collections, Objects, Agents/Collectors and Afterlife. Each of these sections highlights a different approach to the study of early modern collecting, introducing new ways of approaching the subject, revealing new facts about the background to the formation and formation of collections, and interpreting the significance of collections as a whole and of individual objects.
