Summary/Abstract: The book is the first collective introduction to the analysis of genres of expression which have accompanied academic life since the foundation of universities. The introductory historical overview shows university speeches in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Then, the author focuses on praise speeches, characteristic of the first half of the 19th century. The second half of the 19th century and the 20th century are illustrated by various honouring and commemorating genres. The speeches are presented against a broad cultural background, emphasizing the conventions and rituals that stand behind their structure and sociocultural – linguistic determinants.
