- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses questions related to the fixed, hermetic models of conducting scientific research in different scholarly circles. The nature of these models, the prevailing interests and methods of analysis are to some extent dependent on non-scientific premises – social, economic, political and historical. An example is the French understanding of the language phenomena that are the subject of linguistic research. The related methodology based on “enunciation theory” (théorie de l’énonciation) differs significantly from the Polish approach. Polish linguistics and French linguistics utilize two separate models with two separate research cultures. The article shows these differences using the example of research related to notions of dialogicality and polyphony.

- Summary/Abstract:This contribution is a presentation of Jean Baptiste de la Borde’s work L’art de bien prononcer en françois à l’usage de la noblesse polonaise, published in Warsaw in 1765. The manual presents the rules of pronunciation of French vowels, with their translations into Polish and examples, transcribed and likewise translated into Polish. In addition to that there are 27 exercises aimed at explaining the pronunciation of French consonants, which contain short texts with their translation and transcription into Polish. The presented work is an interesting didactic testimony of the 18th century and at the same time a document of the history of the French language.

- Summary/Abstract:This article examines the mechanisms involved in persuasive and descriptive texts found in the French press and on the Internet. We distinguish three levels of discursive operations: logos, ethos and pathos. Using two corpora, one containing persuasive texts dealing with global warming and the other consisting of descriptive texts, we examine the proportions of elements belonging to each of the three levels, showing that there frequently is no balance between them. In persuasive texts, the linguistic elements located at the level of logos are neglected at the expense of non-linguistic elements appealing to the predominant pathos.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents the premises of discourse linguistics as a research program that draws on the broadly defined changes in the humanities. Discourse linguistics studies the discursively shaped relations between the use of language, collective belief systems, knowledge selection processes, and culture; it also asks how linguistic perspectivising creates socially shared meanings, thus modelling specific views of reality. I assume that discourse linguistics becomes an integrative and designing discipline. It integrates different theoretical, methodological and methodical perspectives in designing its research subject, cognitive objective and research procedure.

- Summary/Abstract:This article aims to show that the division of speech into semantically independent lexical and grammatical units is, according to Ferdinand de Saussure’s claim, one of the basic and, at the same time, the most difficult tasks of linguistics. In support of this thesis, the author gives the example of the Polish expression 'tam', which, despite its apparent simplicity, poses many serious problems in linguistic analysis. The literature on this expression is unsatisfactory from the author’s point of view. Therefore, after discussing the most important works on this subject, she presents her own description of the main Polish units containing the 'tam' segment.

- Summary/Abstract:Polish perfective verbs with the do- prefix are mostly divided according to the following criteria: approaching a certain boundary, finality, movement, performing an action to/on an object, and effectivity. We adopt approaching a boundary as the main criterion, applicable to all such verbs, and, following Witold Śmiech (1986), distinguish among them effective-cum-movement, effective and supplementary verbs. Their translation, as observed in the online dictionary Glosbe.com, is not based, as we initially presumed, on French verbs complemented by adverbs, but first of all on the more precise non-prefixed verbal equivalents, above all – perfective or terminative, in the further alternative – on using other verbs, including hyperonyms, on employing “reversed” verbs, verbs demanding the preposition jusqu’à, on referring to the context, and finally – on using participles and nouns.

- Summary/Abstract:The article concerns the quality of old translations, based on the example of Colas Breugnon by Romain Rolland, published in the Polish translation by Franciszek Pik Mirandola in 1921. The book had many Polish editions until 2012 and is still very popular, despite critical opinions concerning the translation. Our analysis shows which types of errors require improvement for the Polish readers to continue to enjoy the translation.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper presents the issue of strangeness experienced by the two largest linguistic groups of Switzerland, which are the German-speaking and the French speaking Swiss. The analysis of the subject literature, press discourse and interviews with the German-speaking Swiss and the French-speaking Swiss from Romandy shows different dimensions of this strangeness (linguistic, ideological, social), also referring to its latest form related to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

- Summary/Abstract:In this paper we offer an analysis of some binominal syntagms of the DET N1 de N2 type in contemporary French. Among nouns that are used as determiners, we have chosen to analyse and then classify those which act as markers of undetermined quantity and/or as markers of different aspect. We call them nominal quantifiers and define them as formal markers of amplification of the reference objects designated by the nouns to which the quantifiers are added. The semantic analysis of these collocates allows for finding their exact paraphrases and proving that these nominal quantifiers (collocates) mark not only the quantitative value but also such aspect values as intensity, infinity, telicity, attenuation, inchoativity, dynamism, iteration and simultaneity.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this paper is to show the role of the connective mais (but) in the press column Readers’ letters. In this type of text, the references to previously published pieces serve as a background to show opinions of the author. Yet for conventional reasons this opposition is frequently expressed using the less categorical argumentative scheme: “Admittedly P but Q”. Our text corpus contains about 100 examples excerpted from the Readers’ letters press columns from different French and Swiss newspapers and magazines (including Tribune de Genève, L’Hebdo, La Recherche, Que choisir, L’Express, Femme actuelle, Causette).

- Summary/Abstract:The present paper examines the Oriental poetics in one of the short stories by Aline Réveillaud de Lens (1881–1925), a French painter and writer living in Tunisia and Morocco at the beginning of the 20th century. It shows that Réveillaud de Lens imitated the oriental poetics so successfully that it could make her readers believe they were reading a translation of classical Oriental poetry. The means she used to achieve this quality of imitation are presented in three parts of the paper. The first one focuses on the subject matter and form of the short story, the second – on its protagonists, and the last one – on the language used by the author.

- Summary/Abstract:The article proposes a joint reading of selected poems by Maurice Federman and Vera Feyder, father and daughter. The father, a Polish Jew murdered in Auschwitz, left only one book of poetry; his daughter began her poetic work 16 years after her father’s death. The two poets find, beyond the reach of time and death, the same voice that speaks of loss, nostalgia, and the importance of the other.
