Summary/Abstract: The monograph contains a coherent description of the functioning of four Italian prepositions di, da, a and in, which belong to the group of neutral prepositions, i.e. polysemic enough that reaching the meaning is based on the relational function in the context. These prepositions compete with one other and with other prepositions in expressing the same relations between the same objects, eg. andare in Francia/a Roma, stare al bar/nel bar/dentro il bar; interessarsi a/di; parlare a/di/con; di più/al più/per lo più. Their functioning in a simple or contracted form is also problematic, due to the presence of an article, eg. andare in/nel Portogallo; saltare di feli-cità/dalla gioia.
