- Summary/Abstract:Nowadays it is difficult to encourage young people into poetry at school. The education systems lacks methods, which could make lyric poetry more attractive for students, because it may be difficult due to its form and specific figures of speech. The purpose of this article is to show the synergy between poems by classical German authors and the mix of music genres like goth metal and NDH (Neue Deutsche Härte), which is realised in the works of the German band Leichenwetter. The text also tries to describe their individual, eclectic music style and the uncommon selection of Poems for the lyrics. Another goal is to explain how the metal listeners as well as poetry fans can benefit from listening to Leichenwetter. As an example is shown the analysis of their interpretation of the sonnet Menschliches Elende by Andreas Gryphius.

- Summary/Abstract:In this thesis, the author would like to consider whether a non-sites of memory can change its ontological status and become a site of memory, and whether such a process can occure in real space, or if a different medium is needed. The author will focus on two dramas, which tell about the analysed processes – Rechnitz (The Exterminatig Angel) by Elfriede Jelinek and Our Class by Tadeusz Słobodzianek – and their role in restoring the memory of the Holocaust. The stories of both places, which reveal the repeatedly duplicated mechanisms, also remain an important context, which makes it possible to believe that the process of restoring memory to non-sites of memory can be put in a universal framework.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper is an interpretation of the short story "Skoczek" ["Knight"] from the collection ["Playing on Many Drums"] by Olga Tokarczuk. As the author admits that she reaches for psychological knowledge to understand reality ("The Tender Narrator"), the interpretation includes concepts taken from depth psychology, in particular Carl G. Jung's analytical psychology. The story presents a relationship of aging man and woman who once had deeper feelings for each other, now, however, they stay connected only by recollecting memories of their common past. Tokarczuk shows mutual anger, sorrow and unspeakable resentment between these two people. None of them is able to free themselves from Jung's shadow and end their miserable relationship. While staying at the seaside, a bizarre occurence happens – a chess knight is caught from the sea. This is interpreted by the concept of Jung’s synchronicity, which may be understood as an attempt to force the characters to change their life situation.

- Keywords:Adam Mickiewicz; literary translator; Goethe; German-Polish translation
- Summary/Abstract:The figure of Adam Mickiewicz as a poet, national bard, political activist Sand founder of the Philomath Society is well known. The aim of the paper is to present Mickiewicz in a lesser-known role of a literary translator translating from German into Polish. Thus, an attempt will be made to answer the question about the reasons for Mickiewicz's translation activity and the ways in which these translations were perceived by his literary contemporaries. In order to do so, an analysis will be made of the Polish poet's translation output, critical statements and self-commentaries of Mickiewicz himself. The analysis of the material allows us to conclude that Mickiewicz "was a great translator", but that translation played an "auxiliary" role for him. In particular, translations of the works of Schiller, and later Goethe, were reflected in Mickiewicz's original work, but also contributed to the development of the Philomat Society. Translations from German were a source of inspiration and new aesthetic trends unknown and unpracticed in Polish literature at the time, which in effect opened the gates to European Romanticism. Mickiewicz's translations served as a means of acquiring ideas and knowledge about other literatures, and he himself, despite his successful works, did not identify with the role of literary translator.

In the theoretical part, the author focuses on untranslatability and describes various definitions of this phenomenon and translation strategies (transformations), which can be used to deal with untranslatability. The analytical part is devoted to wordplays and sound devices (in form of verbal animal derivatives), which cause difficulties in the translation of the poem “Figielek”. The analysis of the German version should illustrate, which solutions were used by the translator to deal with untranslatability.

The detailed analysis concerns the translation methods chosen by the translator Roswitha Matwin-Buschmann and how they convey the Polish verb’s aspectual character in the German translation of the book. The following article answers the question of which translation methods, if any, enable the reflection of the verb’s aspect in German, which is devoid of it.

- Summary/Abstract:This study is to determine the importance of interdisciplinary perspective on the translation of legal texts. It is suggested that the combined research on jurisprudence and linguistics may contribute to better understanding of legal translation. It is argued that the contrastive work on terminology and law is required in order to explore that field. What is more the author stresses the importance of the cultural differences between legal systems in the process of translating on the example of German-Polish and English-Polish translations.

- Summary/Abstract:Upper Silesia is an extremely important region in our homeland. For centuries, it has been a temptation for many countries, including Poland and Germany. This was mainly due to its favourable geographical location and the natural wealth of the region. The constant battles between the two countries and the intermingling of many cultures in this territory have shaped the original language of the people of Upper Silesia, which is based primarily on two languages: Polish and German. Because Silesia, by virtue of the Yalta Treaty, has belonged since the end of the Second World War to the territory of the Republic of Poland, it is treated as an important part of the state being. It should be emphasized that the whole Silesian dialect, including all its dialects, is based on the Polish language system, and any elements from the German language are treated as borrowings. The main aim of the research was to focus on the issue of German borrowings from the culinary field which appear in the Upper Silesian dialect and which are listed in the "Dictionary of Silesian dialects" by Barbara and Adam Podgórski. It was also important to show to what extent words from the German language occur in this dialect and how their borrowing process proceeds.

- Keywords:adult education; final exams; motivators; teacher; educational process
- Summary/Abstract:Language education among adults is becoming increasingly important. The result of this phenomenon is the fact that a large number of language courses are aimed at this age group. Adults start learning a foreign language because they want to improve their professional qualifications and find a better paid job in the future, or - as regards younger adults, pass their high school final exams and get the desired studies. The first part of this study presents the differences between teaching a foreign language to adults and children. Then, on the basis of the theory of motivators relating to undertaking educational activity by adults, the role of motivation in the educational process is shown. The next part of the work presents the results of a survey conducted among high school graduates from Poland and Romania concerning the preferences and needs of young adults in the context of language education. At the end, the conclusions regarding the previously described study are presented, with regard to the educational expectations of students both towards the subject itself, the teachers, and the teaching methods used by them. Young adults are a demanding group of students, because on the one hand, they pursue the learning goals set for them by the school or university, and on the other hand, they already have their own expectations regarding participation in the educational process. They feel an internal need to develop their own interests and acquire new skills, which may help them find their dream job in the future. Therefore, it is important that the teacher, treating his pupils individually, guides them appropriately, showing that learning can be both a necessity combined with an intellectual effort and a valuable experience.

- Summary/Abstract:As a non-state actor in international relations, the diaspora has a strong influence on the society of the host state, but also on the state of origin. Therefore, the use of the diaspora has become a significant means of promoting the soft power of the state of origin. This paper seeks to understand the extent to which diasporas are independent actors and the extent to which their position in the different contexts of host and home states affects their political activity. The pursuit of influence by building networks, communicating persuasive narratives, setting international rules, and using (soft) resources have become major state activities in the international arena. Accordingly, states have been forced to use new tools to build their reputations in the international arena. One such tool has become „diaspora diplomacy”, a state action to use the diaspora to promote a positive image of the country of origin as well as its culture in the host country. The diaspora is not only a foreign policy tool, but as an element of soft power, it can exert pressure on the country of origin. Therefore, diaspora communities can influence the economic and political processes of host countries in favor of the interests of their homelands. One country that has begun to focus on developing its influence by „diaspora diplomacy” is Turkey under the Justice and Development Party government.

- Keywords:logovisuality; written word; television; television discourse; sport
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to define the functions of logovisuality in broadcasts of sports’ events. I consider its importance for the recipients of these messages. The phenomenon of logovisuality should be understood as the occurence of the written word in the television discourse or simply – fortify the television message (and in some cases the Internet) with subtitles and infographics. The main goal of logovisuality is to make perception of given program easier for a viewer. Primarly, I focus on influence that subtitles and infographics (the so-called iconic-verbal messages) have on recipients. I start with analysing the situations where logovisuality is used in every day television communication with its viewers. I connect it with a presentation of the current, unfortunately still insufficient, state of research of this phenomenon. Then I focus on the main topic – the importance of logovisuality in broadcasts of sports events base on the examples of selected disciplines (including ski jumping, football or speedway). I determine what functions it serves in broadcasts of sports events (I try to define common functions for all disciplines and those typical only for selected sports). I indicate that watching sports competitions on television without logovisuality would be very difficult or even impossible. Moreover, I demonstrate that it helps to reduce social inequalities of the deaf and dumb and the hearing-impaired people. I also answer the research question – why logovisuality is the necessary element of broadcasting sports events.

- Summary/Abstract:The article will present the theoretical contexts of the functioning of medialabs: the changes and search for contemporary humanities and the assumptions of the digital humanities paradigm. In the Polish context, the most important are the sources of inspiration by Western institutions and pioneering initiatives that initiate a wide discourse among academics. The historical perspective refers to the idea of DIY and the processes of bottom-up computerization of the country. Medialabs are interdisciplinary institutions with various directions of activity. The second part of the article will be focusing on to the assumptions and methodology of my research on Polish medialabs, and to the observations made so far. The aim of the project is to examine the current condition of Polish medialabs (Katowice, Gdańsk, Kraków). The project will show how the postulate of re-literalization of the humanities and implementation of the axioms of digital humanities in practice is developing in Poland.

- Summary/Abstract:The research premise addresses the question whether and how the historical politics of Germany and Austria affects the cinematic representations of Jews. Both countries are responsible for the consequences of World War II, but they have dealt with their wartime heritage differently. The dissertation investigates to what extent the assumed rhetoric of the debate on Nazism and the Holocaust shapes the cinematic representations of Jews. Also, taking into account the present situation of the Jewish minority in these countries. Selected examples from Austrian and German films make up interesting research material for comparative analysis. By stressing possible similarities and differences between the two national cinemas, it allows to capture certain patterns in presenting Jews as well as indicates their national invariants. The methodological approach draws on theories in the field of memory studies. Particular attention is directed to the question whether analysed films reproduce anti-Semitic stereotypes, or whether their approach is creative and subversive. The dissertation also reflects on the problem whether the generation of Survivors and their descendants are presented in the same way, or whether their cinematic images are constructed in relation to the same or different stereotypes: the Jew as the Other, or the Jew as a Victim?

- No. of Pages:5
- Keywords:Gottfried Benn; ugliness; the aesthetics of ugliness in lyric poetry
- Summary/Abstract:The motive of ugliness in the lyric poetry of Gottfried Benn is an integral element of his work, whereas research concentrates mainly on ideological views as well as professional medical experience of the German author. These issues undoubtedly have influence on Benn’s poetry, however, the aesthetics of ugliness, which is a key element here, appears to be treated secondarily. The aim of this article is to present the motive of ugliness in the lyric poetry of the author as well as present the current status of research on this subject. Academicism of the motive of ugliness dates back to ancient times, when the crucial point for Greek philosophers and thinkers was to try to define beauty and its opposite – ugliness. The aesthetic category of ugliness in literature is presented as the opposite to beauty, innocence and good. It is often compared to evil, demons and human tragedies. Although the aesthetic category of ugliness was especially common in modernism, it must be mentioned that it was also present previously.

- Summary/Abstract:The modern entertainment industry is growing rapidly and is creating an ever-larger body of media to meet the growing demand from consumers, readers, viewers and gamers. In our modern, digital and global society, it is especially important that screenwriters, directors and video game designers make their work accessible to as many audiences as possible. Of course, this is only possible if these works can be translated into other languages to present them to new linguistic and cultural groups. However, translating multimedia works such as movies, video games, theater performances etc. brings with it many new challenges, not least because most of these projects no longer function as standalone works but rather belong to larger multimedia franchises. A translator dealing with such a work must not only pay attention to the purely linguistic and cultural context of the text; The technical limitations of the medium and any legal requirements must also be observed. Moreover, the new text must match those already established in the series, so the translator's freedom of choice of words and style is often severely restricted. Another challenge is the way many translations of transmedia texts work, where (especially in the case of texts from video games) the translator does not receive the entire text, but only single fragments of text, paragraphs, phrases, or even individual words, without access to the context. The aim of this article is to show how creative translation practices – especially transcreation, trans-adaptation and cultural translation – and the use of technological tools can be used to translate transmedia projects so that translations meet the expectations of authors and audiences.
