Summary/Abstract: The term Japanese ‘self-documentary’2 describes an emerging trend in documentary film in Japan since the late 1990s. Diary films by Shirouyasu Suzuki and Kazuo Hara’s Extremely Private Eros: A Love Song 1974 are known as the roots of this genre, similar to a first-person documentary but limited thematically to personal issues such as family history and private complexes. This study shows how these two roots – underground film and independent docu- mentaries – reflected the social changes in Japan and how they became a tool for personal expression and communication in the 1970s.
