Summary/Abstract: This article examines narratives of artists’ documentaries in the digital economies of platforms. I argue that the Web 2.0-based, post-screen documentaries provide for new role offerings that differ widely from its predecessors on TV and in cinema. Platform documentaries centre around the construct of an ‘authentic’ artist’s personality, who borrows from the rhetoric of the distribution networks in which the videos circulate. The crowdfunding platform Patreon. com will provide a study case in point for this. I argue that the performance of personality on Patreon is based on a paradox. On the one hand, the platform promotes narratives of individu-ality and artistic freedom. On the other, it provides custom-fit templates ready to be filled with content.
