From Yovkov to Yovkov: Readings beyond the images (Toward War Correspondent, 2008, by Kostadin Bonev)

Summary/Abstract: This text is a short study of the opposition between different generations of film directors in Bulgarian cinema, considered as a biological and at the same time dramatic process of film evolution in the period after the Second World War. The emphasis is on the stopped films and the struggle of the coming new generations with the ideological dogmas of socialist realism. The focus is on the post-totalitarian and postmodern period with the emergence of the first free and opposition-minded "Independent Cinema Group", founded in 1991 by members of the so-called Bulgarian "new wave" in order to radically reform the production system and create the institution of the producer. By 2013, a new generation of filmmakers will join the informal Rocket Directors' Movement, whose members are proponents of uncompromising auteur cinema and low-budget films. The Raketa movement recently won recognition at the institutional level through the election of one of its emblematic figures as chairman of the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers. This text focuses on the topic of Yovkov in contemporary Bulgarian cinema. "Military Correspondent" is remarkable in that it simultaneously makes a portrait of the Bulgarian classic writer in his early years and freely adapts some of his stories, taking certain motives and ideas. The thesis about the paradox of the open character and removal is presented, which can be seen in Yovkov's handwriting. We believe that this paradox is very cleverly felt by Kostadin Bonev - the director of the film. Yovkov's personality in "Military Correspondent" is built by superimposing three of his avatars: the truth, the text and the interpretation.
