Historic figures in propagandist films under the 1,300th anniversary of bulgarian statehood programme

Summary/Abstract: At the end of the 1970s, on the initiative of Lyudmila Zhivkova, Chair of the Culture Committee, the preparation and implementation of the large-scale cultural program "1300 Years of Bulgaria" began. The aim is to use the anniversary of the establishment of the Bulgarian state to promote national identity, history and culture abroad and in the country. Bulgarian cinema is at the forefront of this program. The proposed report presents a look at some of the chronology and processes of making films about personalities in the history of Bulgaria as an attempt to propagate and legitimize the communist government in the country.
