Summary/Abstract: The connections to theatre in the biography of Vasil Gendov (1891–1970) were numerous, but they had never before been interpreted with regard to his cinema activities. A personal memoir of his career as a travelling actor and entrepreneur sheds additional light of the life and creative motivations of the key figure in Bulgarian cinema between 1910 and 1940. Based on observations on this manuscript and other archival sources this paper offers several hypotheses relating to the intersections between theatre and the early cinema, most important of them being the process of finding and developing film audiences.
