Summary/Abstract: The text proposes to turn to the 50s and to comprehend the processes in Bulgarian painting from this period, related to the imposition of the so-called method of socialist realism and the struggle against "formalism". A specific occasion - the exhibition Contemporary Bulgarian Art, presented in Dresden in 1957 - gives us the opportunity to discuss two aspects, hitherto uncommented in our art history: 1 / the existence of two layers in artistic production - that of the official, socialized but art publicly displayed in the General Art Exhibitions and the other still in the shadows - the art that the authors create in the studio, for themselves, without hope to make it public; 2 / splitting of the evaluation criteria when it comes to presenting the Bulgarian art in the country and abroad. Fate and creativity The quality of the great painter Vladimir Kavaldjiev allows us to analyze these problems, to focus on the overall picture of Bulgarian art of the period and to the study of the Bulgarian "multi-storey" culture.
