Summary/Abstract: This text aims to analyze from multiple perspectives Marta Petreu’s book O zi din viața mea fără durere [A day from my life without pain], published in 2012 and collecting essays written during 3 decades. Firstly there are taken into consideration several meaningful time limits of Marta Petreu’s texts, as the respective essays examine and associate phenomena starting from the earliest explorable boundaries of the Antiquity to the contemporary context of the discussed book’s apparition. Given the high subjective time interval and cultural memory condensed in the book and the day from the title, as well as a significant presence of the number 16 in both Marta Petreu’s book and James Joyce’s novel, a parallel with Ulysses is briefly presented. In the light of Mircea Martin’s essay Radicalitate și Nuanță [Radicality and Nuance], the text inductively argues the capacity of Marta Petreu’s essays to emphasize contextual nuances in order to support the reconsideration of some categorical statements – e.g. by Miguel de Unamuno regarding Blaise Pascal and G. Călinescu about Liviu Rebreanu. Providing a personal perspective upon the pain, the essay that gives the title of Marta Petreu’s discussed book is commented taking into account the same model of radicality and nuance as well as a comparison – on the basis of the author’s perception about the limits of what can(not) be expressed – with the poem giving the title of Marta Petreu’s first book of poetry, Aduceți verbele [Bring the Verbs]. The connections overcoming the first, linear, glance are identified as an essential element at the thematic level of Marta Petreu’s essays – both when considering day to day experience and topics from literature, philosophy or theatre – and likewise at the level of the analyzed book’s structure.
