Summary/Abstract: The popular music culture of the 1930s became increasingly cosmopolitan and global. Gramophone records, radio and sound films enriched the city’s repertoire with new hits, which coexisted with fairground, folk and old urban songs. The musicians of this decade mastered several instruments simultaneously. Therefore, they easily performed traditional Bulgarian dances- hora and rachenica, oriental kutcheks and maaneta, and modern dances – waltz, tango, chardash, quadrille, foxtrot, shimi, onestep, quickstep, rumba and paso doble. There was also a shift of genres from “high” to “low” culture and vice versa.
