Summary/Abstract: The investigation of Early Modern periodical printed newspapers in German in the centres of the overseas provinces of Sweden – Riga, Tallinn and Narva – has not been very active, with new information added only gradually. Newspapers have traditionally been viewed separately from each other, and mainly by listing the extant issues. The purpose of this article is to examine whether the news published in the newspapers of Hamburg/Altona at the end of the 17th century had an effect on the contents of the Riga newspaper Rigische Novellen (1681–1710). It was clearly a newspaper controlled by the central authority: the monopoly position of editor was confirmed by royal privilege. According to this, only the editor was entitled to receive, print and sell foreign newspapers free of charge, while being responsible for the control of content. The newspaper was therefore a sign and a result of the intervention of the central authority in the news trade in Riga at the time when, in May 1680, a royal order prohibited all existing publishing practices in the city and, in particular, the sale of the Königsberg newspaper. A large-scale comparison of news was performed (80 issues, 710 news items) for the period 1683–1701, which contained a sufficient number of newspaper issues (published under peacetime conditions). This is why only the first two years of the Great Northern War were included.
