Summary/Abstract: This article seeks to throw light on the relationship of Mahatma Gandhi and Hindi cinema from three interconnected perspectives. Firstly, I discuss the relationship of the historical figure of the Mahatma and filmmaking. Then, I analyse the ways in which the Mahatma’s politics and ideology have been represented in films. Finally, I look at the representation of the figure and message of the Mahatma in three very different films: the British-Indian coproduction, Gandhi (1983, dir.: Richard Attenborough), the classic Bollywood blockbuster, Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006, dir.: Rajkumar Hirani) and Swades (2002, dir.: Ashutosh Gowariker) that seeks to portray Gandhianism in a way that appeals to the Indian diaspora. By looking at these cinematic texts, I seek to trace the ways in which Gandhi has been situated in Indian popular culture.
