Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to discuss relations between Latin and Polish at the lexical level. I present some difficulties in determining the meaning of words as exemplified by the legal vocabulary concerning the ius civile. The difficulties in question stem from the way Latin words are defined and from the nature of their Polish explications: the author of the dictionary specified Latin terms by means of synonymous Latin and Polish expressions. As a result, he produced sets of terms which refer to particular legal actions that are not further specified in the dictionary. Due to this use of loose Latin and Polish phrases and single words the meaning of some words cannot be precisely determined today.
